2018 Technical Lifetime Achievement Award

Presented to Carl Zeiss SBE

Founded in 1846 in Jena, ZEISS now has its headquarters in Oberkochen in southwest Germany and is present in over 40 countries around the globe with more than 30 production sites, over 50 sales and service locations, and about 25 research and development facilities. For over 100 years, ZEISS has been offering the camera lenses of choice across a broad product spectrum. The story started with the renowned Planar® from 1896. ZEISS is now the world's leading company in the development and production of high-performance camera lenses for all areas of photography and cinematography. ZEISS has over 80 years of cinema lens experience and has won three Academy Awards in the category of Science and Engineering (1987, 1999 and 2012).


Carl Zeiss – Founder
Carl Zeiss was born in Weimar on 11 September 1816. He built microscopes in Jena from 1846 onwards. Together with Ernst Abbe, he succeeded in placing the construction of microscopes on a scientific foundation. This was the basis of today's global player ZEISS.


Ernst Abbe – Founding Partner
Ernst Abbe was a physicist, inventor, entrepreneur, and social reformer. In all areas in which he was active, he made outstanding achievements and therefore played a decisive role in the technical lead, business success and continued existence of the two companies Carl Zeiss and SCHOTT.


Otto Schott – Glassmaker
Otto Schott (1851 – 1935) was born in Witten, the son of a glassmaker. After studying chemistry in Aachen, Würzburg and Leipzig, he wrote his postdoctoral thesis on the chemistry of glass in Jena. Schott began with a series of melt experiments in his hometown of Witten.
